Inspirational Directors

Mike Leigh

Mike Leigh is an English writer and director of film theatre. Although a film director his styles can be adopted and applied to our video :

‘Kitchen sink realism’ which is an English movement in arts and theatre, that explores the Social Realism of Society. Our music video takes this approach. By removing the barriers between the high and low cultures subject to the Post-modernism Theory, our video can suggest that the issues presented in the video (relationship issues) is existent in every culture.
Most of his films indulge into the urban lifestyle and issues surrounding that culture.

His production revolves around improvisation, which allows characters to gain and develop a true understanding of their character, which will enhance the final production in terms of accuracy and performance. If we experiment with the dance scene through improvisation between the girl and the artist whilst using the script as a guide, we will be able to re-create the realism shown in typical RnB videos as we follow a characters perspective.

We also took this approach to add a natural essence to character, as though the character was 'real'.

Ken Loach

Ken Loach is an English and Television director. Similar to Mike Leigh’s style, Ken Loach delivers social realism which is a reflection of his social beliefs, evident in his films homelessness (Cathy Come Home) and labour rights (Riff-Raff). Loach’s footage is always taken and produced from actual locations to add to the sense of realism and include details of the local environment in which may not have been put forward in a studio. His dialogue scenes are shot from medium height and distance as though the audience is right across from the character, we also took this approach, so that our artist seemed as if they were directly communicating with the audience which a typical R&B convention.

Chris Stoke : CEO of TUG (The Ultimate Group) - A music and entertainment group.

He is an inspirational director as he has directed popular R&B videos such as Omarion's 'Entourage', B2K's 'Girlfriend' and Bow Wow's 'Hey Baby'. All music videos aim to promote the song, whilst making the artist appeal to its target audience through techniques explored Goodwins theory for example:
3. There is a relationship between the music and the lyrics.
- In his directed videos like with all R&B videos, the cutting rhythm imitates the rhythm of the music.
4. The demand for the record label wil include the need for lots of close ups of the artist.
Omarion 'Entourage' - There are lots of close ups of him as he is performing on stage.
B2K 'I need a girl'- There are lots of medium close ups of the group as the sing and dance.
